UK London NANA19
Released: June 1989
UK chart position: 19
Cruel Summer was remixed and re-issued in 1989 to coincide with Bananarama's World Tour. The single first entered the UK charts on the 10-Jun-89 peaking at #19 in England and spent six weeks in the charts. The 1989 re-release version is unique as the seven inch version features two additional lyric lines that were not previously incorporated in the original song version: "Who can I find while I am trapped here inside these four walls". These extra lyrics were added after the instrumental break, and perhaps reinforces the message of claustrophobia that Siobhan had so miserably failed to communicate in the original lyrics. These extra lyrics only feature on the seven inch version, and for some unknown reason are not included in the extended twelve inch 1989 mix.

The 1989 remixes by Aitkens, Aitkens, & Trottman were released in three
forms. The standard mix is the swing beat version that appears on the Cruel
Summer '89 seven inch and CD single (3:27) which features additional lyrics.
The twelve inch single features the similarly titled Swing Beat Dub (5:18) that
was also released on the bonus CD on the double Please Yourself CD. The third
mix, is also called the Swing Beat Dub (4:56) and was exlusively released on
the very rare UK DJ-only promo twelve inch record called DUBS. This version
is entirely an instrumental (or dub version) and unlike the other two mixes
is actually a dub mix. Bananarama also included Cruel Summer on their World
Tour and the unreleased Live At Wembley Arena version that was recorded and
remastered at PWL studios is 4:14.
